Vladimir Pištalo – Translation of a novel: TESLA, A PORTRAIT AMONG THE MASKS

Nikola Tesla

Lastavica and Luka Praha, thanks to the general partner SLOT Game a.s., are preparing a Czech translation and publishing of a successful novel called TESLA, A PORTRAIT AMONG THE MASKS written by Vladimir Pištalo.

Vladimir Pištalo is a contemporary Serbian writer. He has received the NIN Literary Award for best novel of 2008 for his novel, Tesla: Portrait Among the Masks. Pištalo was born in Sarajevo in 1960 and grew up in Mostar, Kraljevo and Belgrade and in 1993 he emigrated to America. Vladimir Pištalo is an author who has been writing for a long time but has only in recent years gained full recognition and devoted readers. He is an extremely interesting person, a professor of history at Vuster University of Massachusetts and is currently a visiting professor at the Belgrade Faculty of Political Science. At the beginning of the 90’s he wrote for “Vreme”. His books had already been translated into many languages and he had been praised by many critics such as “Figaro” and “Le Monde” even before he was recognised as a significant Serbian author. Besides his well-known novel about Tesla, he also wrote other novels such as “Milenijum u Beogradu”, his collection of short stories “Kraj veka” and “Vitraž u sećanju” and “Korto Maltese”.

The novel “Tesla: Portrait Among the Masks” is a lyrical monograph of an incredible genius and inventor – Nikola Tesla. The book covers the life of Nikola Tesla, the greatest Serbian scientist and one of the most famous scientists of all times, who invented alternating current. The novel was written in a poetic style, with many exquisitely depicted characters, starting from Tesla’ parents to scientists with whom he worked and industrialists who managed to use his inventions. The book is characterized by a poetic and picturesque style, an excellent knowledge of historical facts and Tesla’s visionary ideas. It is not only the story of Tesla’s life, but also of the great historical change in the period between 1856-1943. Tesla lived in different countries, so the characters in the book come from different geographic locations and periods. For the first time, his one-year stay in Prague is closely captured in this book.

We intend to present the Czech translation of the novel “Tesla: Portrait Among the Masks” in spring 2011. The translation is done by Pavla Horáková and supervised by Mrs. Irena Wenigova.
